We may call Collierville our home, but the town of Memphis has its place in history too.
Memphis History
Founded in 1819 and later incorporated in 1826 by John Overton, James Winchester, and Andrew Jackson, our 7th President of the United States, serving between 1829 and 1837, it’s no surprise the city is named after Egypt’s ancient capital on the Nile River.
The earliest recorded visit to Memphis was by Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto in 1541 during his expedition into the New World.
After the American Civil War, Memphis prospered as a marketplace for agricultural goods and natural resources like lumber. It also marked the end of the American slave trade, and the city soon experienced faster growth, becoming the largest world market for cotton.
Memphis also played a pivotal role in the American Civil Rights movement. The city is home to the National Civil Rights Museum in honor of its place in history.
Today, Memphis has become one of the nation’s leading commercial centers of transportation. FedEx is its largest employer and one of the busiest cargo airports in the world. In 2018 more than 4.47 metric tons of cargo moved through their global air hub at the Memphis International Airport with roughly 450 combined arrivals and departures per day.

Memphis Sights & Sounds
Memphis is best known for the Blues, BBQ, and Rock’n’Roll. Legendary musicians like Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Cash put Sun Studio on the map.
There’s also the STAX Museum of American Soul. The studio cut its first hit single in 1960 with Rufus and Carla Thomas performing “Cause I Love You.” It went on to sell over 40,000 copies and drew the attention of Atlantic Record’s Jerry Wexler.
A very popular place to visit is the King of Rock’n’Roll legend, Elvis Presley’s Graceland estate. Steeped in history, thousands of fans visit each year to celebrate his birthday on Jan 8th, 1935.
Head downtown, and you are sure to visit Beale Street, where there is plenty of great food and music. And then make your way a few streets over to the Rock’n’Soul Museum for a deep dive into the pioneers of sound.
And don’t forget to fill up on some awesome BBQ at Rendezvous with their delicious dry rub or Corky’s if you like it wet.
Memphis Sports
The FedExForum is the home of our Memphis Grizzlies and Memphis Tigers. The Memphis Redbirds call AutoZone Park their home.
Memphis can also lay claim to several professional sports figures. Emmett “Cary” Middlecoff, won 39 PGA tournaments, including two U.S. Opens and the 1955 Masters. Also played in three Ryder Cups. For our basketball fans, there’s Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway and Elliot Perry.
In professional football let’s not forget Claude Humphrey, an All-America defensive tackle at Tennessee State who spent 11 years with the Atlanta Falcons. Then there’s Tim McCarver, who rattled off 21 years in professional baseball between 1959 – 1980 and appeared in the ’66 and ’67 All-Star Games.
Whatever your pleasures or appetites, Memphis is a great place to call home, and we encourage you to give us a call at 901-203-0043 and let us earn your business at our Memphis insurance agency. We look forward to serving you!
