We call Collierville our home with its rich history and culture dating back to 1836. Jesse R. Collier bought the land and advertised it as “The Town of Collier,” then later incorporated in 1850 with Mayor Richard Ramsey running the show.
Collierville History
During the American Civil War, there were two battles fought in Collierville. The first engagement happened in 1863 when Confederate Brigadier General James Chalmer and 3,000 men attacked a Collierville garrison defended by Major General William T. Sherman. The campaign was not successful.
The second battle took place a few weeks later on the garrison, and once again, the Confederates lost the battle with Colonel Edward Hatch defending. The town took heavy damage and almost burned down to the ground. Collierville was re-incorporated in 1870 under the new mayorship of James B. Abington.
Major General William T. Sherman’s monument in Washington D.C. lists “Colliersville” as one of his battles, and union commanders referred to it as Colliersville in official reports.
